" The work on Les Rita Mitsouko is as crafted and splendid as a fine piece of jewelry. If you listen to Variety in reverse, you can clearly hear 'Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree' by Tony Orlando and Dawn. Diabolical! This fantastic contribution to the pop legend was recorded in just 4 hours in the corridors of Grand Central Station. Variety is nothing earth shattering however, it's a pure 2000s."

Biography:
Les Rita Mitsouko came together in the Spring of 1979 when guitarist Fred Chichin and singer Catherine Ringer began working on the same theater production. Upon their first meeting, they were inseparable, talking until they realized they should start the band together. Ringer decided to take on lyrical duties, while Chichin became the resident instrumentalist. They debuted later that year, with Ringer on the organ and Chichin on guitar, while everything else was prerecorded. Around this time they also drafted Jean Naplin into the mix, although he was never a member; he contributed songs to most of their albums and became a frequent collaborator. They realized early that the chemistry they had developed did not translate well to other musicians, thus they decided to keep the group a duo. They performed around Europe, playing several clubs and bars until finally playing under the name les Rita Mitsouko for the first time in November of 1980. They were a very popular live act at the time, and they collaborated with other artists often, most notably with playwright Armando Llamas before his death in 1981. The band signed to Virgin Records in 1982, giving them their first opportunity to release a single. "Minuit Dansant" was the song, and critics immediately branded the band minimalists. The B-side of the record, "Don't Forget the Nite," became a surprise radio hit and was re-released as the A-side soon after. They moved to Cologne and began recording their eponymous debut album, and by the end of 1984 the album was out and "La Jalousie" and "Marcia Baila" became big hits in Europe. Ensuing tours with the Smiths and Kid Creole revealed their growing popularity, and by 1986 they were ready to record their second album. Filmmaker Jean-Luc Goddard filmed the process, resulting in the oddball documentary Soigne Ta Droite, which is of interest chiefly because of the unreleased material that appears on the soundtrack. Producer Tony Visconti was brought in, and the recording process was moved to England to finish the project. The No Comprendo was finally released at the end of the year to a big reception, making them one of the hottest bands in Europe and winning them many music awards. The band moved to New York in early 1987 to hold auditions for a live band. The following tour, which covered most of Europe, was an enormous success and led to the eventual re-launching of La Cigale, an old theater that the band enjoyed. During the tour they also made friends with Sparks, who invited them to collaborate at some point in the future. Musicians like Boy George and Michael Hutchence voiced their interest in working with the group, but these projects failed to go anywhere and the band just moved ahead to the next album. Marc et Robert was the next album, written mostly in the studio, and featuring songs written and performed with Sparks. Another tour followed, leading to the construction of the band's new studio in their home. By 1990, they decided to release a remix album (Re) and perform a month-long engagement at La Cigale. The performances were so successful that the two agreed to prolong the appearance, staying until January of 1991. It was then that they realized that they wanted to record their albums on-stage at La Cigale, leading to the construction of an elaborate recording setup in the theater. They began work on the album in 1992, eventually releasing Systeme D in November of 1993. More hits appeared, including a duet with Iggy Pop on "My Love Is Bad." Another European tour resulted from the release, and they worked with several other musicians during their trips, including Coba and Richard Galliano. A live album was released next, Acoustiques, which sparked another tour through Eastern Europe. Their records were properly released to America in 1999, and following a quiet period they reappeared in 2000 with the Cool Frenesie album. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide

I Met You (Corner Pocket). Ambas canciones pertenecían al LP Mecca for Moderns.

El cantante Frank McComb interpreta el tema I WANT YOU.

Gato Barbieri, "Ruby, Ruby" (1977).

Gato Barbieri, "Gato Barbieri´s Finest Hour" (2000).

Gato Barbieri, "Last Tango in Paris" (Soundtrack, 1973)... Mil gracias amigo Kepa!!!

desesperado y endiosado coronel Kurtz en Apocalipsis now!

“I didn’t start to play ’til I was maybe 10 years of age” Bernard recalled “I picked up the guitar, listened to records. I was in grade school and I played with the high school jazz band. They thought I was reading the sheet music, but actually I was making up everything I could play.” Soon after graduating from High School,
he began a three-year guitar apprenticeship in Koko Taylor’s high-flying Blues Machine. He also played in the late Willie Dixon’s Blues All-Stars and performed with his Dad at the 1983 Blues Festival - one of the event’s highlights. Along the way, Bernard picked up slide guitar tips from Johnny Winter and in the 80’s also learned from the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. With those experiences under his belt, Bernard moved to Paris in 1989 to live and play the blues with his father. He joined the tourband of Luther Allison after a furious collaboration of “Father & Son” at the ‘89 Chicago Blues Festival. A recording of this formation is to be heard on the Luther Allison album “Let’s Try It again” (RUF Records). Bernard released his first solo album in 1990 with the significant title “The Next Generation”. In 1999, two years after Luther passed away, Bernard decided to move back to the States to go back to his roots and push his career in his native country. Bernard seems to have inherited Luther’s knack for igniting audiences, but he’s no clone of his famous father. He is definitely blazing his own path with a style that reflects a unique mix of traditional and modern influences. The Allison torch has been passed, and it’s clear that Bernard takes his role as its bearer very seriously. He’s assumed the challenge of keeping the blues alive and growing - a commitment he renews every time he takes the stage. In 2004/2005, Bernard Allison released his 6th album on Ruf Records, “Higher Power”. Whether you pay your respects to Bernard Allison as one of the high powered blues guitarists in the world or you, like Bernard, pay your respects to that Higher Power that guides you through life, these are 13 songs Bernard sings that will speak to you.
Bernard totes the same smokin’ six string shooter that his late father Luther Allison assaulted the blues with. And he is blessed with his father’s soulful voice, spiritual devotion, and a musical freedom which experiments with the blues.
“In order for anything to expand, you have to take a risk,” says Bernard. “Blues is about experimenting and getting your feelings across to someone else. And if you want to keep it going, people are going to have to give it all a chance because we’re losing all our creators. Because I’ve been taking risks on every album I’ve recorded, this record is just a logical progression from everything else I’ve done. Instead of playing rippin’ 12 bar blues guitar over and over, there are bluesy songs, soul, funk, R&B songs and a couple of rock things which shows the overall musicianship of Bernard Allison.” The major risk Bernard takes here is in his song writing, where he is confident enough to strip away the layers and bare himself to the world. It has taken Bernard a long time to feel free to talk or write a song about what’s going on within him or his personal tragedies.
After decades of chasing the muse, Bernard is now settled down raising a family without the old personal vices. Thus the music he’s written speaks of the inner peace and companionship every human searches for. The CD opens with Bernard’s trademark blues rock guitar, but it rocks out with a moral. Therapists recommend getting problems out, instead of concealing them. In the highly personal opening song “I’ve Learned My Lesson,” Bernard sheds himself of any disguises and admits to the world the inner personal problems that have held him back. That is until his personal Higher Power delivered him safely to inner peace. Other original songs like “Stay With Me Tonight” or “Next To You” speak intimately about his love of the security of his family. While in other songs like “New Life,” Bernard goes even further by apologizing to those he’s hurt by word or deed. And that’s the magic power of the blues. If Bernard’s honesty touches just one person with a similar struggles then the power of the blues works. Then Bernard becomes the higher power by healing another troubled soul.
“Musically and lyrically this is definitely a mature effort. I’ve been through a lot since the passing of my father. I’m married and I have started my own family. This music comes from everyday responsibility and lifestyle. I’m calling the album Higher Power because there were times when I had to pray to my own higher power to help me through. Immediately after my father’s death I was still touring, I wanted to continue because that was what he wanted me to do. I feel that with his presence, he’s still, even today, with me everywhere I go, and the help of my higher power, there’s no going wrong. That is the message in many of these songs.”
Amid all the daily pop culture pressures to be the next American Idol why does Bernard stay rooted in the blues? “The blues is my roots. Regardless of how far outside of the blues I reach for tones, I can’t ever leave the blues. Whenever I play, all those guitar parts are Luther Allison coming through me. My dad was the same way, he wasn’t all blues. He loved Otis Redding or Chuck Berry. I’m just showing where my influences come from. And respecting the people who got me to this point.

Tenho ainda o box-set 'The Devil Made Me Do It'(2001), recheado de raridades, mas vou deixar para uma próxima ocasião.

Calma, não me crucifiquem !

Seus maiores hits são “I Feel Free”, “Sunshine of Your Love”, “White Room”, “Crossroads”, e “Badge” (escrita por Clapton e George Harrison).

Apenas com o lançamento do álbum Love at First Sting, a banda conseguiu agarrar as audiências americanas.

Em vez disso, Gilmour assumiu o completo controlo e criou "A Momentary Lapse of Reason".

It would be impossible to research a comprehensive account of the number of tracks Hopkins cut during a 40-year career. There would always be incomplete studio records, lost masters and impenetrable pseudonyms to defeat the completist. But what can be marvelled at is the remarkable quality of so much of his vast output. Like John Lee Hooker he rarely submitted to the starjacket of the 12-bar form, preferring to linger when it pleased him, or while he invented the next line. This made him a backing musician's nightmare - keep it simple, and keep your ears open, were the golden rules. Sometimes, these rules were forgotten. But almost always the unique Hopkins genius shines through, as on the mid-late 60s sessions represented here. The voice is rich and reflective, capable of both anguish and a chuckling lasciviousness. And the guitar style of Lightnin' Hopkins is, bar none, the southern country blues at its most inventive, expressive and exciting. John Collins1. Found My Baby Crying2. Milton "Little Milton" Campbell, Jr. (September 7, 1934—August 4, 2005) was a blues vocalist and guitarist best known for his hits "Grits Ain't Groceries" and "We're Gonna Make It." Most popular in the sixties, he became one of the lesser known greats of the genre, combining traditional lyrical structure with smoother production.Born in the Mississippi Delta town of Inverness and raised in Greenville by a farmer and local blues musician. By age twelve he had learned the guitar and was a street musician, chiefly influenced by T-Bone Walker and his blues and rock-n-roll contemporaries. In 1952, while still a teenager playing in local bars, he caught the attention of Ike Turner, who was at that time a talent scout for Sam Phillips' Sun Records. He signed a contract with the iconic label and recorded a number of singles. None of them broke through onto radio or sold well at record stores, however, and Milton left the Sun label by 1955.
After transitioning from several labels without notable success, including Trumpet Records,[1] Milton set up the St. Louis Bobbin Records label, which ultimately scored a distribution deal with Leonard Chess' Chess Records. As a record producer, Milton helped bring artists such as Albert King and popular R&B singer Fontella Bass to fame, while experiencing success for the first time. After a number of small format and regional hits, his 1962 single, "So Mean to Me," broke onto the Billboard Magazine R&B chart (then called the "Black Singles Chart"), eventually peaking at #14.
After a short break to tour, manage other acts, and spend time recording new material, he returned to music in 1965 with a more polished sound, similar to that of B.B. King. After the ill-received "Blind Man" (R&B: #86), he released back-to-back hit singles. The first, "We're Gonna Make It," a blues-infused soul song, topped the R&B charts and broke through onto Top 40 radio, a format then dominated largely by white artists. He followed the song with #4 R&B hit "Who's Cheating Who?" All three songs were featured on his breakthrough album We're Gonna Make It, released that summer.
Throughout the late sixties Milton released a number of moderately successful singles, but didn't release a further album, Grits Ain't Groceries, until 1969, in support of his hit of the same name, as well as "Just a Little Bit" and "Baby, I Love You." With the death of Leonard Chess the same year, Milton's distributor, Checker Records fell into disarray, and Milton joined the Stax label two years later. Adding complex orchestration to his works, Milton scored hits with "That's What Love Will Make You Do" and "What It Is" from live album What It Is: Live at Montreux. Stax, however, had been hemorrhaging money since late in the previous decade was forced into bankruptcy in 1975.
After leaving Stax, Milton struggled to maintain a career, transitioning first to Evidence, then the MCA imprint Mobile Fidelity Records, before finding a home at the independent label, Malaco Records, where he remained for much of the remainder of his career. His last hit single, "Age Ain't Nothin' But a Number," was released in 1983 from the album of the same name. In 1988, Little Milton was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and won the prestigious W.C. Handy Award. The name "Little Milton" was reused for Gerald Bostock, the fictional boy poet central to Jethro Tull's 1972 record Thick as a Brick. His most recent (and final) album, Think of Me, was released in May of 2005 on the Telarc imprint and included writing and guitar on three songs by Peter Shoulder of British-based blues-rock trio, Winterville.

It's 1965, and Gate's guitar sound is different — not so brash and trebly but smoother, with more of a jazz and occasional country kick. Most of these sides were never issued after being acquired by Chess. There are two takes of Little Jimmy Dickens's C&W novelty hit "May the Bird of Paradise," both of 'em swinging easy. Gate was in a Sonny Boy Williamson mood that day, reviving three of the harpist's oldies along with a few of his own and the ominous blues "Long Way Home," which threatens mayhem most charmingly.... by Bill Dahl** Charly Masterworks - Altaya Publishing Brazilian Edition Nº 17

T. Bone Walker was of the generation who grew up with the country blues, the music of the plantations, the back porches, the small-town street corners and the travelling medicine shows. Why, he even helped Blind Lemon Jefferson around. But he was also one of the first bluesmen to catch on to potential of what electronics wizard Les Paul was up to in the 1930s.
Electric instruments and amplification proved crucial to the development of the blues, as it migrated from the rural south towards the industrial north. And out west, Walker was perfecting the electric blues. This technological development allowed for the move inte city clubs, and hence to concert halls and stadiums. And it also allowed for a degree of showmanship denied the acoustic player bent over his instrument, or howling into a primitive microphone. An extrovert could make good use of a long guitar lead, and Walker compiled a living textbook of guitar showmanship - the splits, the duckwalk, the "guitar-behind-the-head" trick.
It was this potential that Walker tapped into the 1940s, making him the archetype of the most familiar image of the modern bluesman, surviving most gloriously in the stage work of B.B. King - sharp-suited, urbane but flashy, exploiting the dynamics of the instrument.
Aaron Walker was born in Linden, Texas, in 1910, and began performing locally before moving to Los Angeles in the 1930s. The 'T. Bone' nickname was an Americanisation of his Cajun-sounding middle name Thibeaux. On the West Coast he met up with that other pioneer of the electric guitar, Charlie Christian, who went on to play with Benny Goodman. The jazz tinge was to become one of the elements in Walker's influential style. His first recordings date from 1942, and towards the end of the Second World War he was in Chicago, cutting some sides for the Rhumboogie label.
Back in Hollywood in 1946 he began the association with the Black & White label (and it the following year Comet) which produced his first classics and established him as one of the biggest stars on the urban blues scene. "Call It Stormy Monday" in particular, cut with five-piece that added trumpet and tenor saxophone to the usual small-combo backing of bass, drums and piano, was to remain indelibly associated with him.
His career was to continue on such labels as Capitol and Imperial, and echoes of his influent versality could be heard everywhere - in Chuck Berry's rock & roll, in the British blues of the '60s, in Jimi Hendrix's mind-boggling fusion of blues and psychedelia. Walker continued to record and tour until his death in 1975, and while worldwide fame to the extent, of that enjoyed by Muddy Waters and B.B. King was never quite his, he stands with them at the summit of the blues pantheon. And the most persuasive arguments for that assessment are included here.

I could bore you with compiling a list of the musicians in the rock, blues, jazz, and new age field who were influenced by this master of electric blues but I will refrain from doing so. Albert King was one of those whose playing inspired me to learn guitar. I thought "heck, it sounds easy enough for me to play". Aah the naive thoughts of youth! Truth be told often the easiest sounding parts are the hardest to play and play with authority. Albert plays a lot of the same licks but inflects them differently in delivery - a talent that is in and of itself notable. He finds ways to transcend the patterns that all - himself included - fall into when playing. To quote Robert Palmer, his solos combine both "torrential power and striking freshness" and his style works not only in traditional shuffle style blues but also with r & b, funk, soul, jazz, and rock stylings backing him up.No offense intended to BB King partisans with the title of this review (or to BB himself), but the truth is the truth. BB is (and has been) a wonderful ambassador for the blues. However, if we are talking about whose stylings have been most influential, Albert comes out ahead by quite a ways. No one has ever played the guitar with more authority for one thing. Also, Albert combined an impeccable sense of timing, the ability to utilize dynamics effectively, a penchant for economy of notes, and the ability to subtly inflect the notes he played with an individuality that few have ever approached. On top of that, his style was akin to a wrecking ball slamming into a building. His was a killer tone coupled with the elements I outlined earlier that many have sought - and still seek to - emulate in their playing (including yours truly). As Robert Palmer astutely pointed out in the liner notes, Albert's playing is never cluttered. On this album he plays uptempo jazzier tunes, scorching slower blues, and songs where he combines his approach with music stylings then current (circa 1978).
More could be stated but perhaps the best tribute to Albert King was from Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh (who also eulogized him at his funeral in December 1992). Joe Walsh stated quite bluntly that "Albert King could blow away Eddie Van Halen with his amp on standby". Obtain this CD and listen to King live employing the various elements of his unique style. If you are infected with "MTV-itis" be warned: the songs on this disk average about 8 minutes per with some surpassing 10 minutes long. But then if you enjoy good music and biting soulful playing, you will not be disappointed.... by Shawn Tzu (Seattle, WA, U.S.A.)

(born William Arnold, September 16,1935, Chicago, Ill.)A disciple of JOHN LEE ''SONNY BOY'' WILLIAMSON, Billy Boy Arnold is a journeyman harp player and vocalist whose best recordings were made for Vee-Jay Records in the mid-1950s. As a youth, Arnold copiously initated Williamson's harp style. Later, however, after also being influenced by LITTLE WALTER and JUNIOR WELLS, Arnold developed more of an original harp sound, though he never really strayed too far from his Sonny Boy roots.
Arnold played on Chicago street corners with BO DIDDLEY before making his recording debut at age seventeen on the Cool label. However, it was the songs he cut with Vee-Jay from 1955 to 1957, principallly the tune ''I Wish You Would'', that gave Arnold credibility in the Chicago blues community and enabled him to perform alongside artists such as HOWLIN' WOLF, MUDDY WATERS, and EARL HOOKER in the late '50s.
Arnold did some occasional recording in the '60s and was a regular performer in Chicago blues clubs, but nothing he cut matched his '50s work. In 1975 he went to Europe with Bo Diddley, JOHNNY ''GUITAR'' WATSON, and other bluesmen as part of a blues package tour. Subsequent trips to Europe led to recording of the album 'Ten Million Dollars', for the French Blue Phoenix label in 1984. Arnold continued to work Chicago blues clubs in the late '80s. In 1992 he performed at the San Francisco Blues Festival. He continues to reside in Chicago

(aka Deacon L.J. Bates) (born July 1897, Couchman,TX; died December 1929, Chicago, Ill)
Blind Lemon Jefferson was one of the most influential country bluesmen the genre has known, as well as one of its first commercially successful recording artists. Jefferson's recording career was short; his nearly one hundred titles were all recorded between 1926 and 1929. But in that time he became one of the most popular male blues singers in black America. His success enabled other male blues artists to secure recording contracts in an era that was dominated by female classic blues singers such as BESSIE SMITH, MA RAINEY, and IDA COX. Little of substance is known about Jefferson's personal life. One of seven children, he was born blind in the late 1800s in East Texas and, most likely, learned to play guitar as a means of scraping out a meager living. Jefferson's handicap didn't hamper his artistry or his resourcefulness as an itinerant bluesman. In 1917, after performing at house parties, picnics, and dances around Worthman in central Texas, Jefferson moved to the Deep Ellum section of Dallas, where he played on street corners for spare change. Jefferson's reputation as singer-guitarist grew to the point where he attracted regular patrons when he played, and he earned enough money through tin-cup offerings to support a wife and child.
Although Jefferson is known as a bluesman, he also sang and played religious hymns, spirituals, work songs, and folk tunes in the tradition of a Southern songster. His vocal style included many of the mannerisms that would later define blues singing, including an elastic, thinly veneered vocal whine. But it was Jefferson's guitar style that had the biggest impact on his contemporaries and future generations of bluesmen. Jefferson constructed intricate melodic structures punctuated with irregular phrasing that often expanded standard tempo patterns. He also used, to great effect, single-string arpeggios, repeating bass runs on the lower guitar strings, and interesting jazzlike improvisations, which gave his style wonderful color and charisma.
Jefferson was also a first-rate songwriter and permanently altered the relationship that blues singers of the time had with professional songwriters. Before Jefferson, nearly all of the female classic blues singers relied on songs written by outsiders. Jefferson recorded many of his own songs. Some were admittedly take-offs on traditional folk-blues songs, but at his composing best, Jefferson artfully penned vivid lyrical accounts of eraly 1900s black culture in the South, especially Texas. Part of Jefferson's early fame stemmed from his regular travels beyond Dallas. There are accounts of him performing in Oklahoma, the Mississippi Delta, Atlanta, and the Carolinas. But it wasn't until 1925, when Jefferson was recommended to Paramount Records by SAMMY PRICE, a Dallas piano player/record store employee, and was invited to Chicago to record, that he had his biggest impact. Jefferson recorded blues and spirituals, the latter under the pseudonym Deacon L.J. Bates. His recording success led Paramount to search for other male blues singer-guitarists. In late 1926 they discovered BLIND BLAKE, who along with Jefferson provided Paramount with the two biggest-selling country bluesmen of the decade. Jefferson also recorded some sides for the Okeh label in 1927, including ''Match Box Blues'' and ''That Black Snake Moan''.
Jefferson recorded a number of other self-penned classics. ''See That My Grave is Kept Clean'' was an early blues spiritual tune that has been interpreted by countless blues musicians and has since become a permanent fixture in the country blues songbook. Jefferson also cut a number of East Texas folk-blues standards, including ''Jack O'Diamonds'' about the perils of gambling, ''Boll Weevil Blues'' about the dreaded insect that ravaged the East Texas cotton crop in the early twentieth century, and a revamped ''See See Rider'', which Jefferson called ''Corrina Blues''. Blind Lemon Jefferson died just as the first great blues era was coming to a close. The fact that no official death certificate has ever been found has given rise to numerous accounts of his passing in December 1929. The most colorful had Jefferson freezing to death in a Chicago snowstorm. Another account blamed a heart attack for his demise. It's quite possible that Jefferson suffered a heart attack during a Chicago snowstorm.

Blind Willie Johnson was born in 1897 near Brenham, Texas (before the discovery of his death certificate, Temple, Texas had been suggested as his birthplace). When he was five, he told his father he wanted to be a preacher, and then made himself a cigar box guitar. His mother died when he was young and his father remarried soon after her death.[1]It is thought that Johnson was married twice, first to a woman with the same first name, Willie B Harris, and later to a young singer named Angeline, who was the sister of blues guitarist L.C. Robinson. No marriage certificates have yet been discovered. As Angeline Johnson often sang and performed with him, the first person to attempt to research his biography, Samuel Charters, made the mistake of assuming it was Angeline who had sung on several of Johnson's records. However, later research showed that it was Johnson's first wife.
Johnson was not born blind, and, although it is not known how he lost his sight, Angeline Johnson provided this account to Samuel Charters: She said when Willie was seven his father beat his stepmother after catching her going out with another man.
The stepmother then picked up a handful of lye and threw it, not at Willie's father, but into the face of young Willie.[2]
Johnson remained poor until the end of his life, preaching and singing in the streets of Beaumont, Texas to anyone who would listen. A city directory shows that in 1944, a Rev W J Johnson, undoubtedly Blind Willie, operated the House of Prayer at 1440 Forest Street, Beaumont, Texas.[citation needed] In 1945, his home burned to the ground. With nowhere else to go, Johnson lived in the burned ruins of his home, sleeping on a wet bed. He lived like this until he contracted pneumonia two weeks later, and died. (The death certificate reports the cause of death as malarial fever, with syphilis as a contributing factor.) In a later interview his wife said she tried to take him to a hospital but they refused to admit him because he was black. Although there is some dispute as to where his grave site is, members of the Beaumont community have committed to finding the site and preserving it.

Charlie Patton, better known as Charley Patton (May 1, 1891 - April 28, 1934) is best known as an American Delta blues musician. He is considered by many to be the "Father of Delta Blues" and therefore one of the oldest known figures of American popular music. He is credited with creating an enduring body of American music and personally inspiring just about every Delta blues man (Robert Palmer, 1995). Palmer considers him among the most important musicians that America produced in the twentieth century. Many sources, including some musical releases and even his gravestone, spell his name “Charley” even though the musician himself spelled his name “Charlie”.[citation needed]

Deep in the quagmire of mainstream pop culture, the blues continue to bubble, and it's purists such as vocalist Cathy Jean who keep the genre percolating. "Tear Me Apart" is a solid mixture of melancholy melodies, balls-to-the-walls blues rockers, and impassioned ballads. Recorded in what sounds like totally live-in-the-studio fashion (very few overdubs are detectable), Cathy Jean's debut twists and turns through a 14-song mountain of blues standards that would make the Swiss Alps envious. And yet, no matter who she borrows from, her voice is a beautiful instrument that serves her needs perfectly-- soulful and soaring, sultry and sexy, and subtly vulnerable at just the right moments. More importantly (and more thoroughly than anyone who comes immediately to mind), CJ inserts her persona and preoccupations into these cover versions; and her takes on classic tracks such as "I'm A Man" (re-written from a female slant) and "One Good Man" makes the former her own and gives new life to the tepid latter. She makes "Who Do You Love" a moving, varied song, as opposed to the schlock electric blues George Thorogood squeezed a hit from. From the spirited, up tempo romp of "Hello Little Boy" to the temperature-rising torch of "Sweet Blood Call," right on through the busy organ and big vocal pyrotechnics of "Rollin' & Tumblin'," "Tear Me Apart" does a marvelous job raising blood pressure. And on the swaying "Baby Get Lost," she piques the libido with, "I got so many men they're standing in line." Hmmmm... where do I take a number? On "Tear Me Apart," this lady doesn't just sing the blues, she feels 'em. And when that voice works each end of her angelic register (and every note in between), you can't help but feel 'em right along with her. That Cathy Jean has absorbed the obvious influences the blues has to offer while escaping their cliches already says a great deal about how tough this woman is. --MUSIC MONTHLY MAGAZINE, USA
Listening to the album "Tear Me Apart", you become aware of one thing: Cathy Jean is a most versatile and inventive artist for a woman still on the right side of thirty. On this debut set she covers a wide range of songs and sounds, which each test her abilities in various styles of blues, jazz, and jump. This whole album is interesting and entertaining, and doesn't lose anything by repeated playing. Cathy Jean knows how to pace herself, be it over a 2 1/2 minute rockin' number, or a 5 1/2 minute blues cut about needing "One Good Man". Of all the fine material contained on the set, perhaps it's "That's All Right", a bare bones acapella number which best indicates the cloth she is cut from. This gal isn't afraid to go out there and lay it all on the line, and let the listeners decide. Others have compared her to janis Joplin. There is indeed a similarity, Joplinesque phrasing does creep in, but this is no copyist. Just as her cover of the Billie Holiday classic "Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me" is similar in approach to Lady Day's version, but by no means an impersonation. What we are hearing is the application of the best aspects of a past talent, put to good use by a new talent, and that's always been the case in most art forms. Cathy Jean is a real star in the waiting. Very deserving of recognition and success. Equally important on this album are the fine musicians in the backing band. There are some wonderful solos and nice touches from all involved, never overshadowing but certainly enhancing the vocals. Recordings made "live in the studio" appear to be in vogue at the
moment. This album is such a collection, cut over a three day period in '95, but it works. The band comes together with each
other and with Cathy Jean. Her comment, "that was fine", at the close of the first number, is a real understatement if ever there was one! Featuring little post-recording tampering, you get an amazingly fresh feel which draws you into it. You can't help but like this attractive blonde from Baltimore, who has and wears more rings than Ringo Starr!! --DENMARK BLUES MAGAZINE

Formed in Brussels back in 1969, Doctor Downtrip were to debut with a single for the Vogue label. The outfit’s slightly “psychedelic” leanings (with regards to their use of saxophone on “gravitation” and flute on “music for your mind”), gained them quite some attention. Who exactly was in the band remains a mystery, although the Dutchman J. Van Wagensveld did compose both songs on this effort.![]() |
| In june 1970 they played the “Puzzle P-festival”(a famous Brussels club in the Rue De Bouchers) with many Belgian hardrock bands as well as headliner Wallace Collection. But the first highlight of their relatively brief career was their appearance at the Bilzen Rock & Jazz festival in august 1970 along such acts as Badfinger and Screaming Lord Sutch. Both festivals also had another Brussels band, Burning Plague on the bill. | |
| When by the end of 1970 Plague’s Michael Heslop (who was original from the USA) decided to put his band on hold, the announcement of his entry to Doctor Downtrip quickly followed. | |
![]() | After a while this new line-up (John Hastry on bass, Michael Heslop on guitar, Paul Van De Velden on drums, Michel Rorive on vocals and Sylvain Paul on organ) was really rocking as proven on the “summer festival Den Haan “ and the fondly-remembered Jemelle festival on august 8th,1971 where they supported Golden Earring and Genesis.(In april 1972 they supported Genesis a second time when they played in Arlon) |
![]() Ik more than a year before the new five-piece had an impressive armoury of self-penned compositions at their disposal, and the first proof of it, came in 1972 when they released the single “take my place” backed with “depressed” on CBS records. Both songs showed the real potential of this hardrock band as their fine organ/guitar work was finally captured on vinyl. After healthy sales a second two-tracker was scheduled for release, but without haste, as it was already 1973 when “jumpin’ in the air / winter’s coming” saw the light of day. | ||
![]() | ||
| The “A” side was a radio-friendly rock song (along with sing-along and handclaps) but it was the backside who made impression with yet another heavy song with great solo’s. An appearance as support act for Mark Bolan’s T-REX (on march 24th ,1973) at the big vorst/forest national hall also made impression. | ||
![]() ![]() | ||
| Therefore it came as a surprise to hear the band was working on a full-lp with a new singer; Jean Paul Goossens (and Serge Paul on second guitar). This first lp (recorded with Jean Huysmans in five days!) was without any doubt a cracking way to make their mark on the Belgian scene, and capable numbers such as “free morning time”, ”lost city”, “wanted”(heavy!!!) and the uptempo “big blue train” all demonstrated an uncanny knack for creating great hardrock-music. 1974 saw the release of another 7” with two reworked songs from that first album but after this, there was only silence from the Doctor’s camp. | ||
![]() | By the end of 1975 Doctor Downtrip had already undergone a few changes with Heslop & Paul leaving to be replaced by only a guitarplayer: José Cuisset who came from Lagger Blues Machine. But it wasn’t only the line-up who’s been changed, also the name was shortened to Downtrip. |
| After that, the band managed to record their second lp and for the first time produced it themselves (all other recordings were produced by Jean Huysmans). | |
| “If You Don’t Rock Now” was released in 1976 on CBS/Epic. Excellent hard-rocking stuff throughout; highlights were “sweet lies” and the awesome “getting louder”. Although they were a regular attraction at nations rock clubs and festivals, from then on, they no longer seem to have been able to get invitations to play the bigger support slots. | |
![]() | |
| It took more than two years before another Downtrip album hit the shops, but “Downtown” was a fine third set. Especially the first side had storming numbers such as “scarecrow”, ”shout it out”, “dedicated to you” and the longer title song. | |
| Despite this album things started falling apart and by the end of the decade, the Downtrip members concluded that they were fighting a losing battle and had called it a day without making much of a fuss about it. | |

Susan Christie - Paint A Lady (1970 )
Previously unreleased Psychedelic Folk album from 1970 by Susan Christie, a Philly based sophomore folk singer who had one novelty hit for a major label in the late '60s. This album, which featured her psychedelic take on Country standards and hand crafted tales of inner-city solitude backed by a Folk-Funk rhythm section, was not considered commercially viable and shelved...until now! Uber-legend John Hill produced the album which features 8 tracks including a 12 minute 'drugsploitation' epic called 'Yesterday - Where's My Mind' featuring Susan flipping vocal styles between Janis Joplin and Margo Guryan.
